The word and concept will fill the week… then perhaps disappear from use for a few years. Here in the cancer center however it is a daily event since all patients have their own inauguration. The walk down the hall to the tomotherapy unit, the sitting on the hard, cold table, the uncomfortable positioning, the pinch of the tattoo mark, sometimes the use of a claustrophobic mask, the ticking as the machine delivers healing beams of radiation. That first day is intimidating, even for the toughest person.

Entering the unknown takes enormous bravery and trust. In ancient Rome when the term was first utilized, its was a job of the diviner to interpret signs of an important undertaking- it meant to consecrate, install or invest. First used in the 1500’s then adopted in the US in 1776, it implies the most auspicious occasion, a time for reverence, commitment and change. The meaning is also a mark of a new beginning- the first in a series. Hence my adoption for that first solemn step into treatment with many to follow.

The start of any new activity can be frightening. More so when it is related to life saving and involves a large, noisy, powerful machine. You do not have to receive radiation to understand the concept- how many times have you met with a new challenge? Life delivers many opportunities to be brave- cancer treatment provides. It’s surprising how quiet that inaugural day is here, without fanfare or ceremony. A timid and gowned figure guided to a hope for cure. Perhaps offering an arm for the blessed serum designed to fend off the disease.

There is faith in these moments- more than we can know without our own trial. Some come with humor, “Shoot me Doc!” Benny quips as he hops on the table. Amal softly takes our hands and timidly is positioned with a small tear ready to fall. Blustery Gary swaggers in as if to say “Bring it on- no fear here!” For everyone there is a beginning. A chance for life extension. Dreams yet to fulfill, more love to extend, perhaps caring for others to be done.

Again and again the scenario plays out; each similar yet so different. I respect this sacred event, more than any other inauguration. The power of these candidates for therapy is mighty. They will direct lives, events, and the world will turn. They will push beyond fears to fashion their own time here regardless all the other drama in the world. I have profound respect for each one and am honored to share in their journey and witness their unique greatness, most especially on their inaugural day.
