We all hope that those in position would wield their power for good. In every aspect of life: business, politics, communications, service organizations, sports, schools, churches and even medicine there is a hierarchy. When those in control lead with equanimity, justice, and responsibility, the entire organization or community is raised and enjoys success. When leadership power is corrupted, weakness, naivety, youth is ripe for abuse. Then the system fails everyone. Unfortunately, people who strive for greatness sometimes believe their “supremacy” gives them rights without consequences. Most of us discovered this on playgrounds. The lesson is learned: stay away, follow rules, avoid conflict. When another life insult arrives, like a sickness, injury or suffering we may give in, follow the rules, hope the bully goes away- often it just strengthens the threat.

Sorry but pushing back is necessary. Weakness begets helplessness and misery follows. When patients come for care, my role is often to direct, but without empowering them there will be no success.  Despondent and beaten the first day, we rally as a team to lift, inspire, encourage with the expectation they will ultimately assume control over the situation. Without the determination to be well, pain-free, gain health and stability, the bully cancer wins. Of course, there are times the disease overwhelms and no tenacity or therapy will tame it. Intention is 80% and if you work at it, at least you can have control in your mind and heart and assurance that you personally played a strong and capable part.  Even when patients near the end of the journey, confidence, serenity, and acceptance are important.

While an amazing force, power is available to us all. No one can live your life, no one has the same journey- blessed or difficult, no one can fully understand or appreciate your fear and passion. It is all you. Find your own voice. You have the right to take the reins.  After all these months of threats, do not let anything or anyone put fear in your heart. Be your own powerful force.
