The full length window in the exam rooms allow the sun to beam with views of preserve and pond. Over the years I’ve witnessed the peace provided from nature at just the right moment. I am not disappointed. While discussing a plan of care with Jake and Sally, five fully grown turkeys prance right by, one stops to peck on his reflection in the window. They seem full of themselves for making it past Thanksgiving, unaware that new traditions make them a good option this weekend.
The review of scans for 86 year old Jake’s treatment stop while we take it all in and giggle. Sally perks up and points a frail finger over the turkey’s head. “That is mistletoe. I know. I was a master gardener!” I am more impressed she can see 50 feet away. What looks like a bush or vine entangled in a bare tree is vibrant green and round. (see pic by clicking on title) I jump up, and run with the scissors (tsk tsk I know) to snip. Sally confirms her suspension. Jake sweetly takes the sprig from her hand and holds it over head, offering a soft kiss on her cheek. Adorable. They both change the dynamic in the center for the day.
The idea formulates quickly and I cut away the trailing pieces from the bush and begin “gifting” sprigs to the patients on therapy Monday. Their reactions in turn were a gift to me. Clyde twirled it with a wistful smile. Maureen grasped it with a twinkle. Marvin offered a loud chuckle. Gruff Frank a small tear. Every emotion evident at a time when holiday memories swarm us all. The tiniest surprise invoking the deepest of feelings.
Sharing this small mistletoe moment with you, I hope brings a smile and a reminder that simple can be sweet and so is my wish for a very merry holiday.
