Did you plant a kiss on the bruised knee or ego and say “all better”? The child looks at first surprised but then thinks, “If you say so”. It’s all about perception. There is no need to focus or plan for “the worst”. Drama, sickness, recovery happen regardless of our thoughts. We enter each new day with the mystery to unfold. It will contain magic and quite possible a little mayhem.
It’s a beautiful sparkling morning with storms anticipated later… I hope they hold off as a beloved couple will say their vows this afternoon. We have convened from near and far to hear the words “For better, for worse, in sickness and health”. A wedding is a wonder. We know that these words acknowledge challenges, but also that even when something difficult arrives to disrupt peace, they will be together to make it “all better”. That is faith and hope in the midst of this amazing commitment to love. Their patience in arriving to this day is testament of their desire to have family and friends witness. We take our own part seriously, aware that when there are trials, we can convene to support because we are invested in the promise.
For those facing challenges, let’s borrow the faith of this loving couple. Even if you have never spoken vows, you live them. If someone calls in need, your car keys are in your hand. If a friend needs a prayer, you bend a knee. If a child needs inspiration you extend yourself. The vows we make to each other are endless. Be assured that there are many who hold you in their hearts and love and protect you as well.
As the minister guides the words today, some of us long married will nod our heads in understanding. Those who have lost loved ones will appreciate how life interferes with living. But for every couple who aspire to join, they are to be commended for courage. Mystery and magic do lie ahead, but what is profoundly real is the determination to love deeply, accepting, encouraging and sometimes kissing the “knee” and being the only one who can say “all better”.
God Bless you Chris and Nicole for reminding us today that a wonderful life is lived together with family, friends and each other to face the future with joyful anticipation. “May you live happily ever after”.
