Happy New Year! No pressure. No resolutions. No need to add drama. Let’s just appreciate an opportunity for renewal. Those who navigated the challenging terrain of cancer therapy, covid or other illnesses this year know the concept of drilling down to what truly matters. They teach us to stop buying into the future. The present day is the most precious.
We too can envision a brighter beginning as relationships replace stuff, comfort and familiarity bring more joy than adventure. But a lesson learned is tough to live. This is not a trite message about living each day as if its the last… after all who will put food on the table, help a child, pay a mortgage, care for an ailing parent? It more about recognizing the gift of insight others have to share. Again and again I assure you that they would urge us: “Don’t busy away your day”.
But Doc, there is so much to do. As we age and become the senior generation, responsibilities seem to increase. Isn’t it about time to shift perspective? Some of us resist passing the baton, moving from center stage, turning to provide support and advice with less demand and direction. Allowing for others actually takes self discipline. (Is this ringing a new years bell for you?)
Thousands of patients have a common thread and can provide a unique insight. They are still desperate to help others before themselves, they want to limit healthcare expenses to provide for another, they hand off leadership or the reigns (or even the laundry) to someone gifting aid. They would tell me again and again how minuscule every perceived concern was when they found their own mission.
It is never too late to develop a new perspective for a new year. Be passionate about what you do, who you care for, how you engage in life today. Try to imagine a clean start that is rooted in purpose, not losing weight or a dry January ( what you hadn’t considered?). Just living one day after another with a real plan that satisfies your personal mission. Somehow, regardless the life we each lived to date, we turn to an enlightenment we knew was there waiting, but didn’t have the need… or courage to explore.
It is the common thread of advice my dear patients would share today. Tapping into their experience and wisdom can lead each of us into a more meaningful, serene and focused year …one day at a time.
May I suggest that we all virtually polar bear plunge and take a dip into the ocean of renewed spirit?
Happy New year. I wish you health, peace, and a passionate purpose. Joanne
