Profound inspiration is available to witness as the Tokyo Olympics begin after a year delay. As a physician I am ever fascinated by the strength, endurance, power and perseverance on display. Every athlete, every sport, fierce in determination, their individual success built on tremendous sacrifice. The families who supported from young ages, cheering from afar. The “normal” lives on hold curled into dreams and aspirations like the flag hugging their shoulders. The faces are fresh and expectant with wide eyed wonder.
A year of darkness postponing the events that no one could have imagined. They held the dream, continued the training without fail, keeping their hopes in view. Now each individual inspires us with profound fortitude. They gift us with the simplest impression that we too can rise. We can find within us the strength for each trial.
I am grateful for the Olympics, not for the distraction, the competition, the thrill of winning. Instead for the single – minded purpose and focus on display. These athletes are actually not unique. They embody the human spirit. They encourage each of us to marvel at their prowess, but also at that real possibility of magic living in each of us.
Olympians demonstrate what commitment, not to a sport, but to yourself can accomplish. They help you to believe that you too can do this. You can manage the crisis, you can heal. You can live your life with courage. You can succeed against the odds. The concentration we see on their faces looks back at you in your own mirror. Borrow their faith. Believe in your very best. Hold onto your own dream and cheer for the hurdles you overcome everyday. No one, no disease, no tragedy can negate your personal dreams. Let the magic wash over and lift you into a light of renewal. This is your day. Face it with determination and gratitude. You will also be the example to another to live their best life. You do not need the flame, or the podium, or a medal to manifest this. Receive the inspiration and leave no room for fear or disappointment. Just doing.
Let’s watch those shiny expectant faces and borrow their resolve, seeing the very best in ourselves. Give yourself the chance to rise above. Take a step and smile. It is all you need to do to affect your mind and then your day. Get up for your own day of greatness. Then do it again tomorrow. Thank you Olympians, the entire world needed you so very much this year.
